"Saz'iso play saze, a style that developed when iso-polyphonic a cappella folk songs, with at least two melody lines and drone backing, were matched against violin, clarinet, lute and percussion. The result is music that is unworldly, often melancholy and haunting"

"Saze is the folk music of Southern Albania, recognised by Unesco as a masterpiece of human heritage. Derived from the rural a cappella style of iso-polyphony, the modernised urban version sports clarinets, violins, lute and frame drums, as well as the all-important voices ... Recorded in Tirana by a high-powered production team including Joe Boyd and Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club), this is a compelling recording of a distinct and valuable musical form"

"A remarkable emotive, keening, mourning sound is characteristic of south Albanian iso (drone) polyphonic singing (two interacting melodic lines over a drone), of the mountanious region's playing of clarinet and violin, and of saze, the urban folk music of southern Albania (northern Epirus) ... Under Albania's previous isolated regime this very striking, immensely attractive music only occasionally reached the outside world ... This group of saze singers and musicians, some still living in Albania, some in the diaspora (...), were brought together in Tirana in October 2016 by Joe Boyd, Edit Pula and Andrea Goertler, to be recorded by Jerry Boys ... The singers (...) are the edgy-voiced Donika Pecallari, the equally passionate but slightly warmer tones of Adrianna Thanou and the masculine rawness of Robert Tralo. Though the album's subtitle refers to song, the instrumental playing, in song accompaniment or instrumental dance music, is a glorious, emotive, grainy, windingthing, more than matching the singing"
