"Chouk Bwa were a revelation upon their debut album, 2015's Se Nou Ki La!, a wonderful set of simple but hard-hitting Haitian voodoo religious roots made up of thumping drums and joyous harmonised vocals. Their follow-up takes things in a different direction as they team up with Belgian production duo The Ångströmers. The result is dark, dirty and dubby ... It may be as subtle as the addition of a bubbling, droning underbelly to a song; the best moments come when the focus is rhythmic, the heavy synth beats mixing alongside the voodoo drums. However, this musical meeting feels less a hands-on collaboration than a sort of remix project, as if ChoukBwa did their thing separately before the Ångströmers came in to chop and change and add their electronic flourishes"

"Chouk Bwa is in charge, and the Ångströmers follow in their wake, building in echoes that mimic the energy of a live performance for a carefully finished studio recording. For mizik rasin ensembles like Chouk Bwa, this is arguably ideal; the culturally sacrosanct drums remain necessarily central, while the communal energy of the ensemble shines. Vodou Alé is less an attempt at hybridization than a contemporary approach to vibrant, longstanding musical traditions, unique, entrancing, and glorious"

"This collaboration between Haitian septet Chouk Bwa and Belgian production team The Ångströmers mixes the polyrhythms and call and response chants of voodoo ritual with the heaviest bass and dub effects. So well do they complement each other that, after a few listens, it becomes hard to imagine either existing without the counterpart, the producers neatly bringing individual drums and voices in and out of focus while viscereal thunder roams disorientatingly around the edges and then pummels you just when you least expect it"
