"The disc itself offers the listener a varied and interesting cross section of Kalevi Aho's chamber music that spans nearly forty-three years, making this a most valuable release. Whilst his music can divide critics, most will agree that he is certainly one of the most individual voices composing today ... His music can be stark and challenging, but also rewarding and is in no way unapproachable to the listener ... The second work, In Memoriam Pehr Henrick Nordgren, is for me, the finest performance on this disc, and whilst there is very little to choose tempo-wise between Kuusisto and Eggebrecht here, it is Kuusisto who clearly comes out on top. His performance is one of real intensity and again the emotion he achieves with his playing is almost tangible, a truly splendid performance, one in which Jaakko Kuusisto shines ... The performances are excellent, and this would make this an excellent introductory disc for anyone who only knows Kalevi Aho's orchestral works"

"The works here find him Kalevi Aho in various states of mind but mostly diligence and distress. The two pieces written to mourn fellow musicians are, in fact, the best. Lamento was created for the funeral of the violinist Sakari Laukola, who died young in 2001 ... The tightly entwined Kuusisto brothers are not afraid of its raw emotions. Grief evidently draws Aho deep into his own creative sensibilities ... and the memorial piece ofr the composer Pehr Henrik Nordgren is engaging in its combination of a salute with the search for a way out of the darkness ... It's the best-played piece here, Jaakko Kuusisto's sincerity obvious and his tone particularly strong and beautiful high up. Elsewhere, Aho's own identity can recede into the background"

"Not just a master of orchestral music, the leading Finnish composer here reworks motifs by Bach and Beethoven in these diverse and vibrant works"
