BBC music magazine, 2020 December
"Blomstedt's attention to detail is admirable, and his performances are wonderfully controlled. Perhaps the Symphony's slow movement lingers a little more than necessary, but the orchestral playing is so incandescent that it's hard to complain ... This is a splendid and inspiring disc, and it can't be recommended too strongly"
Opus, 2020, nr. 99

"Recommended: Herbert Blomstedt was 92 years old when he conducted the performances on this recording. I mention this fact, remarkable in itself, for two reasons. Firstly, it's easy to forget it when you listen to this disc, so youthful, vigorous and agile is the music-making; and, secondly, while you don't get to that age without seeing a few things, not even he has lived through a global pandemic like the one we're going through now ... The orchestral playing is utterly sensational throughout, though you'd expect that from the Gewandhaus, of course ... In short, this Brahms 1 is brilliant. It is sensationally played, on a big old-school symphony orchestra, but there is still transparency and leanness in the texture"

The gramophone, 2021 July
"Throughout, the Leipzig orchestra play magnificently and, to my ears, with far more depth and character than they did for Chailly in his Gramophone Award-winning set"
