"Franck's Violin Sonata ... is one of those lovable works few can resist ... However, the performance here is not the most lovable I have heard. Capuçon's first entry sets the tone for his gruff, blustery approach ... while the demure and reticent Yuja Wang takes a back seat ... The overbearing cello is not quite as prominent in the two Chopin works ... Wang's 'leggiero' and 'dolcissimo' is truly gorgeous to hear but does not sit comfortably with the feisty character of her partner ... I began wondering how much time they had been able to spend together preparing ... Capuçon and Wang conclude their programme with ... Piazzolla's 'Le Grand Tango', a piece they clearly enjoy"

"Yuga Wang and Gautier Capuçon play César Franck's Violin Sonata in its most commonly used transcription for cello and piano, by Jules Delsart. There are some lovely performances of this arrangement in the catalog (some are mentioned below), but there is a major issue in this version, a view of the piece which can feel one dimensional in sound and character ... And indeed, the sound engineering overall in this release is not the best. There seems to be a strange inconsistency, where the piano sounds warm and close but the cello thin and far away. This sadly undermines both performers' efforts on an album of technically and musically demanding works."

"While neither Gautier Capuçon nor Yuja Wang let their side down, the opening of their duo recital lacks the magic this masterpiece can evoke. Both play with poetry and warmth but can turn solid where coolly patrician tone is needed ... Both players - two of today's outstanding virtuosos - are on better form in Chopin's Cello Sonata ... Neither player is an obvious natural in Piazzolla and the music takes flight only in its dazzling final section"
Fono Forum, 2020 April
