"Editor's choices - August 2019: Pichon and a crack team of well-contrasted soloists paint an electrifying portrait of a composer on the cusp of greatness in this ingeniously-assembled trio of pasticcios based on the music which Mozart composed in the run-up to his game-changing collaboration with Lorenzo Da Ponte; ensembles from L'oca del Cairo and Lo sposo deluso crackle with energy and the more familiar concert arias are brilliantly sung, but the unaccompanied canons are the real pearls. A definite Record of the Year for me"

BBC music magazine, 2019 December
"Pichon's approach is ingenious ... Sabine Devieilhe is the show's star. Her distinctive soprano excels not only in the fiery passage work of 'Da Schlagt' (from Mozart's Der Schauspieldirektor) but also in the legato warmth of 'Ridente la calma' ... The orchestral playing throughout is texturally clear, musically fluent and theatrically apt"
Fono Forum, 2019 Dezember
The gramophone, 2019 Awards
"Beautifully performed and thoroughly enjoyable ...The three overtures go with a swing, the fiery Thamos overture being especially suitable for 'The Debauchee Punished' ... Whether or not you go along with Pichon's meta-operas, this is an excellent selection that shows Mozart preparing for the three comic masterpieces"

"Even great composers go through tricky patches. In the period before the great trilogy of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Cosí, Mozart became stuck on several projects that remained unfinished but contain some superb surviving music. His incomplete operas L'oca del Cairo and Lo sposo deluso have now been woven into a sort of postmodern tapestry in three scenes by the ingenious Raphaël Pichon with his ensemble Pygmalion on Libertà! ... Magpie-like, Pichon also draws on Mozart's contemporaries in Vienna, Paisiello, Martín y Soler (the piece that's quoted in Don Giovanni's final supper) and Salieri (a comic ensemble that's a winner). Each tableau starts with a strong overture ... There's room for concert arias at which the French soprano Sabine Devieilhe excels, arrangements of domestic canons, and while the logic of the whole may not be purist, it's totally ingenious and brilliantly delivered"
