"Only fitting that the ever-resourceful Chineke! should kick off a brand new contract with Decca celebrating Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Listening to this expertly curated collection of orchestral and instrumental sweetmeats reveals a composer well steeped in the formality and grandeur of Edwardian times but increasingly a composer reaching for and more importantly hearing and adapting to the music of the American South. A spontaneous gift for melody is etched with a hard-to-define homesickness, an ache that suggests a very real awareness of his origins ... Well-made and generous music, then, played with purpose and spirit by an ensemble where the sense of shared enjoyment ... is palpable. Put simply, an invitation to know this music better and hopefully to spread its goodwill"

"Editor's choice - September 2022: Chineke! play out of their boots on this marvellous collection showcasing the breadth of Coleridge-Taylor's imagination and his gift for orchestration, from the evocative incidental music for a 1912 production of Othello to the Hollywood-esque Ballade in A minor and the lighter, occasionally slightly Impressionist Petite Suite de Concert from 1910, which closes with a tarantella of disarming grace. Urioste is a commanding soloist in the expansive Violin Concerto, composed for Maud Powell in the final year of Coleridge-Taylor's short life"

"Chineke! here presents one of the biggest and best collections of his music yet released. At its heart is the heavenly Violin Concerto; Elena Urioste and the orchestra under Kevin John Edusei give a wonderful performance full of fiery spirit and delicacy"

"Das Chineke! Orchestra ... besteht aus ethnisch diversen, mehrheitlich schwarzen Musikern ... Zuweilen irritiert eine gewisse Weichheit, zuweilen Laschheit der Darstellung. Das technische Niveau ist hoch, dennoch liesse sich in puncto Biss und Schliff noch weiter gehen. Sehr schön ist das trotzdem"

"This is the first release in Chineke!'s contract with Decca ... The orchestra consists of majority Black and ethnically diverse players. They have selected Coleridge-Taylor for their first outing with their new label, a colourful twofer that contains a variety of music including one major piece, the Violin Concerto ... In fact, the best thing about this release is Elena Urioste in the Concerto ... Sweet-toned and sensitive, she is perceptive as to dynamics, and phrases charmingly, drawing out those rewarding, though ultimately salon-scaled, melodies. Unfortunately, she has to contend with a small-scaled and not especially detailed orchestral response under Kevin John Edusei ... This orchestra is going to have to increase its string section"
