Numbering of Buildings in the Old Aarhus/Bygningsnumre i det gamle Århus
An outline of the numbering of buildings in 19th century Aarhus.
In the 1820s Aarhus counted approximately 5000 inhabitants in 900 households.  Thus numbering was not a matter of immediate urgency.  In 1839 consecutive numbering was initiated, but as the number of households increased, this system soon proved to be chaotic.  It was then substituted by the address system of today.  This meant that more than one Aarhus household had to carry the unlucky number 13.  Hence as a curious remnant of former times, many streets lack a number 13.

Citizenship/Århus Borgerbog
An account of the acquisitions of citizenship in Aarhus from 1750 to 1862.
When applying for a trade licence, a person had to be sworn in as citizen of the town.  A tax then had to be paid to the municipal authorities of which the rate depended on the trade.  These data are valuable information due to detailed registration of name, profession and place of birth.  Entries from 1787 also disclose the amount of money a new citizen was prepared to donate as poor relief.

From 1845 onward, place of birth is registered, and in the 1860 census information on address and religion is included as well.
